The NFFGRB accepts 7 different color varieties in the Flemish Giant Breed.  A Certificate of Development (COD) has been written to offer these colors in a “Broken Variety”.   Essentially, this means that the original colors will be mixed with white and patterns of color will embellish its coat.

Holden Rabbit Ranch has joined together with 5 other breeders to produce stock that exhibits the closest specimens to the COD.  Although the COD has been written and pending submision  it will take careful breeding to have animals worthy to submit for ARBA’s consideration within 1 to 2 years.  Our objective is to have the Broken Flemish Giant accepted as a showable variety within 5 to 8 years.  It is our mission to provide those animals at all of the presentations necessary to pass this variety into the ARBA Standard of Perfection Flemish Giant Broken Variety.

Thus far, we have had great success with Broken Light Grays, Sandies, and Blacks.  We are into our 4th generations of Broken Flemish.  They are starting to show consistency in genetics moving toward the COD.  Fellow breeders have been focusing on producing the same colors as well as the lovely Broken Fawns.  We are thrilled to see their successes as well.

As a group, we have great dedication to this new venture.  The Flemish Giant is a beautiful animal with the potential to offer an even “fancier” appearance.  We hope you enjoy them as much as we do.  We welcome your comments and encouragement.

Proposed Working Standard

Broken Flemish Giant

Bob McBee Alvarado TX

Brokens are to include any recognized variety of the breed, or variety within a group, in conjunction with white.  Colored sections on Brokens are to match, as closely as possible, the standard for the colored variety.  The twenty points allotted to the color are to be applied half to color and half to pattern.

COLOR & PATTERN – Brokens are to have both ears colored. With color

around the eyes, and on the nose.  (No preference given for a nose

butterfly over an evenly balanced nose marking.)  The body pattern may

be spotted, with individual colored spots or patches over the back, sides,

and hips; or a blanket pattern, with color starting at or near the neck, and

continuing over the back, sides, and hips.  Preference is for an evenly

balanced pattern.  Toenails should be white, but there is no fault or

disqualification for colored toenail(s).  Eyes – Color to correspond to the

            colored variety requirement.

Faults – Unbalanced nose marking; excessive white in ears; unbalanced body

markings; uneven color.  Color, in the judge’s opinion, more than 50

              percent.

Disqualifications from Competition – Color, in the judge’s opinion, less than

10 percent.  Absence of color on the nose (Note: Color appearing in any

area where the butterfly would normally occur satisfies the requirement

for a nose marking.), around the ears, or on the body.  Eye color other

than called for.  Excessive scattered white hairs in the colored section.

No disqualification for a white spot in a colored section.
